Bow hunting for deer OK'd in state park

April 14, 1991|By Peter Baker

Bow hunting for deer will be allowed in two sections o Patapsco Valley State Park in Carroll County from Nov. 1 through January. The decision to open 500 acres of the park was made last week by park manager Donald Gaver.

The bow-hunting-only season in the park, which will open more than a month behind the rest of the state, will be run on a trial basis this year and evaluated before future seasons are considered.

The two tracts of the park that will be opened to 10 permit hunters per day are from Arrington Road south to the Howard County line and from Raincliffe Road south to Howard County.

That area totals about 800 acres, but much of it will be used as buffer zones 150 yards wide to protect houses and roadways.

* Freshwater fishing remains hot, with tidal tributaries and reservoirs drawing much of the action.

Crappie fishing has been good at Conowingo, Liberty, Prettyboy, Loch Raven and Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge. Bass fishing has been picking up at Conowingo, Loch Raven and Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge.

At Liberty and Piney Run, striped bass have been hitting live shiners and drifted minnows.

At Deep Creek Lake, walleye and northern pike have been

hitting minnows fished deep.

In the upper Potomac, smallmouth bass are hitting live bait, dark grubs, crankbaits and jig and pigs in deep holes.

In the tidal Potomac, largemouth bass have been taking dark grubs and plastic worms fished near wood structures.

White perch fishing is good in upper stretches of tidal rivers, where they have moved to spawn.

Some of the best spots are Red Bridges, Marsheyhope, Blackwater, the Magothy, the Patuxent River at Waysons Corner, Millington, the Susquehanna flats and up to Port Deposit.
