Capitals Liut hurt for playoff opener

April 04, 1991|By James H. Jackson

The Washington Capitals yesterday lost goaltender Mike Liut with a bruised ankle when he was hit by a puck in practice.

Jim Hrivnak was recalled from the Baltimore Skipjacks as an emergency backup to Don Beaupre for last night's opening Stanley Cup playoff game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.

Liut is expected to practice today, and Hrivnak is expected to be returned to the Skipjacks in time for their Calder Cup playoff opener tomorrow against the Binghamton Rangers in Binghamton, N.Y. The Skipjacks have, therefore, not recalled a goalie to replace Hrivnak.

Shawn Simpson is Hrivnak's backup on the Skipjacks, and Byron Dafoe, a Washington Capitals draft choice, is available. Dafoe is with the Hampton Roads Admirals, who are in the East Coast Hockey League playoffs.

In another development, the Skipjacks have reached an agreement with radio station WITH (1230 AM) to broadcast the Baltimore playoff games, both home and away.

Ken Albert will continue to handle the play-by-play.
