Construction could begin as early as Aug. 1. Plans call for expanding the 120-bed facility to accommodate 200 prisoners.
When the expansion is completed, Brown told the commissioners that he expects to need 21 additional employees. The project is expected to take nearly ayear to complete.
TAX OFFICE OPENED
WESTMINSTER -- State Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein opened a new field office here Monday to help county residents with a variety of state tax services.
The office,in the Westminster Shopping Center along Route 140, will be managed by Warren Therien, a city resident since 1968. The office will handletaxpayer inquiries about state income tax matters, business registration requirements, unclaimed property and motor fuel tax regulations.
Taxpayers also can make payments at the office for taxes collected by the comptroller and have their Maryland income tax returns completed free if they bring a completed copy of their federal return and all W-2 statements. Goldstein expects about 56,000 state income tax returns from the county.
Goldstein noted that 881 taxpayers in Carroll County have contributed $8,343 to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Trust Fund on their 1990 Maryland income tax return.
