Tasty chocolate-cherry combo

THIS YUMMY DESSERT is an invention of Hershey Foods Corp. It combines cherries, chocolate and almonds for maximum flavor.

Cherry Vanilla Brownies

1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries, well drained

1/3 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 tablespoons light corn syrup

1 tablespoon kirsch liqueur

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/3 cup chopped slivered almonds

1 cup vanilla-milk-flavored chips

Vanilla drizzle, recipe follows

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line a nine-inch square baking pan with foil. Grease and flour. Blot cherries between layers of paper towels.

In small mixer bowl, beat butter, sugar, eggs, corn syrup and kirsch until blended. Add flour, cocoa and baking powder; blend until combined. Stir in chopped cherries, almonds and vanilla chips. Pour into prepared pan; bake 25 to 30 minutes or until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan. Cool completely. Cut into 16 squares.

Garnish with vanilla chip drizzle. in small microwave-safe bowl, place two-thirds cup vanilla milk flavored chips and one teaspoon shortening. Microwave at high for 30 seconds; stir until smooth. Drizzle across brownies.
