John D. Mayhew USF&G retiree

Services for John D. Mayhew, a longtime employee of United States Fidelty & Guaranty Co. and later the general manager of the Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, will be at 10 a.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Towson.

Mr. Mayhew died Thursday at Manor Care Nursing Center in Ruxton. He was 87.

Born in Roanoke, Va., Mr. Mayhew was a graduate of Washington & Lee University. He spent his entire career at USF&G, retiring as a field manager in 1968 after 40 years. He then worked as the general manager of Green Mount Cemetery, retiring in 1983.

He and his wife, the former Gwen Greiner, moved from their home in Timonium to Manor Care in Ruxton in 1987. Mrs. Mayhew died in 1988 after 55 years of marriage.

The Mayhews moved to Baltimore in 1939 after assignments with USF&G in Denver and Raleigh, N.C. They became active in the Trinity Episcopal Church, where Mr. Mayhew served as an usher in the men's club and on the Vestry.

His special loves included gardening and baseball. He was an avid Orioles fan and managed a Little League team during his son's childhood.

Mr. Mayhew is survived by his son, William Mayhew of New York City.
