Gertrude L. Smith Retired nurse

A Mass of Christian burial for Gertrude L. Smith, a former Baltimore resident and retired registered nurse, will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Matthews Roman Catholic Church, 5401 Loch Raven Blvd.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday after a long illness at the Fox Chase Nursing Center in Silver Spring. She was 92.

The former Gertrude Lawrence was born in Clayton, N.Y., and was a graduate of Clayton High School and the Kings County Hospital Nursing School in Brooklyn.

She worked several years as a nurse at Kings County Hospital and in the medical department of the United Garments Workers Association in New York.

In 1926 she married Sheldon B. Smith. The couple lived in Kingston, N.Y., before moving 18 years ago to the Loch Raven Apartments in Baltimore. Mr. Smith died in 1979. Mrs. Smith moved to the nursing center in 1989.

She is survived by a son, Sheldon B. Smith Jr. of Bethesda; three grandchildren, Sheldon B. Smith III of Langhorne, Pa., Melinda A. Smith of Baltimore and Valarie L. Smith of Oakland, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
