Capitals preview

VS. NEW JERSEY DEVILS

* WHEN: Tomorrow, 7:35.

* WHERE: Capital Centre.

* TV/RADIO: HTS; WMAL-AM 630.

VS. BUFFALO SABRES

* WHEN: Sunday, 7:05.

* WHERE: Memorial Auditorium.

* TV/RADIO: Ch. 20; WCAO-AM 600.

* OUTLOOK: The Caps (35-35-7) clinched their ninth consecutive playoff berth last night, eliminating Philadelphia, 3-0. Now it appears to be a battle with New Jersey to see who draws the second-place N.Y. Rangers and who gets the unenviable task of playing Pittsburgh in the first round. A win tomorrow over the Devils would seal third place. Tomorrow is New Jersey's last game, but the Caps will get an extra chance in Buffalo on Sunday. The Caps appear to be hitting their stride at the right time, going 7-3-1 in their last 11 games. Goalie Don Beaupre played last night, making 21 saves in the shutout, but coach Terry Murray probably would platoon him with Mike Liut to begin the playoffs.
