PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- The TPC Stadium Course owes Bob Tway a debt that has gone uncollected for eight years. It was here in 1983 that Tway, playing in the PGA Tour Qualifying School, shot a final-day 81 after five impressive days of play to miss getting his tour card by one stroke.
A victory at The Players Championship would certainly settle the score. Tway took the first step in that direction yesterday, when he shot a 7-under-par 65 to take the first-round lead.
Tway has a lot of company in the par-busting set, though. Thirty-six golfers shot in the 60s, and 79 broke par as this once-feared course turned belly up for the players in perfect weather conditions. Only 38 failed to at least match par.
