Concert for troops opens up on cable

March 29, 1991

A live concert Sunday night featuring singer Whitney Houston welcoming American sailors home from the Persian Gulf can be seen by most cable subscribers, following a decision by the HBO premium service carrying the concert to open its signal to non- subscribers.

"Welcome Home Heroes" is scheduled at 9 p.m. Sunday from Norfolk, and originally was planned to be available only to HBO subscribers.

However, in a message to cable systems yesterday, HBO chief Michael Fuchs said, "The unique national significance" of the concert prompted the service to allow cable companies to make the show available to all basic subscribers.

Among cable carriers in this area, the show can be seen on Channel 34 on Baltimore County's Comcast Cablevision, Channel 32 on Harford County's Comcast, Channel 22 on Howard County's Storer Cable and on Channel 22 on Baltimore City's United Artist Cable.
