Liberge Sets A Record

Jeff LiBerge set a new school record in the pole vault and was a part of the winning team in four events at the Linganore Relays Monday in Frederick County. The event had been postponed Saturday because of bad weather.

LiBerge vaulted 14-foot-0 to set the new mark. He teamed with T.J. Bowers, who turned in a 9-6 effort, to win the team competition. (All events, including field events, are scored as a relaysin the Linganore meet.)

Coach Bill Hill said the effort by LiBerge was the second-best vault ever made by a Carroll County high school student.

In the shotput, LiBerge (43-3 1/2) and Bart Black (42-10) took first, while LiBerge (147-3) and Mike Strine (115-11) teamed to win the discus relay.LiBerge also joined Jason Craig, Jay Merker and Matt Knights to win the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:08.15.

The 1,600-meter relay team ofMark Craig, Gunner Kroe, Wade Shank and Kyle Hoffman also took firstin 3:39.9. Two newcomers to the Owls program, North Carroll transferJamalh Hogan (41-4) and basketball standout Herman Costley (39-10 1/2) made an instant contribution by teaming to place second in the triple jump.

For the girls, the four-mile relay team of Liz VanDerslice, Amanda Givens, Bonnie Bullock and Stephanie Morningstar took first in 25:48.7. Bullock and Morningstar joined Pauline McAlonan and Adriane Weigman to take second in the distance medley relay in 14:42.1.

Also in second for the Owls were Kim Jones (26-5) and Jessica Farinholt (30 1/2) in the shot put, Kenya Warfield (5-1) and McAlonan (4-8) in the high jump, and Warfield, Corrine Glover, Kym Liddick and Holly Stewart in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:18.3.

No team score was kept in the meet, which also featured Meade and North County from Anne Arundel County, James Woods of West Virginia, and Linganore and Thomas Johnson of Frederick County.
