Columbia Woman Killed When Parked Car Hit

COLUMBIA — A Columbia woman was killed Monday when her parked car was struck from behind along the right shoulder of Interstate 95 South near Savage, state police said.

Teresa Louise Strickland, 28, of the 9100 block of Helaine Hamlet Way died shortly after arrival at the Universityof Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was flown byhelicopter following the 8:35 a.m. accident.

Both cars overturned along the right side of the highway. No other cars were involved in the accident.

The driver of the second car, Pauline S. Jiffas, 30, of the 8300 block of Silver Trumpet Drive inColumbia, was treated and released from Howard County General Hospital. Police cited her with negligent driving and failure to stay within marked lanes.

When the accident occurred Strickland was sitting in her car, which she had parked along the right shoulder of the highway. She was waiting for another car that was following her to catch up, police said.

The accident occurred about three-quarters of a mile north of Route 32.

MARSHAL PROBES FIRE THAT DESTROYED BARN

Thestate Fire Marshal's office is investigating a suspicious fire Sunday that caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to a vacant barn in Waterloo.

The fire began shortly before 7:15 p.m. along a wooded area of Old Waterloo Road near Lark Brown Road, firefighters said. A fire report lists the owner of the two-story barn as Howard Research and Development Co.

Firefighters said the barn was apparently a total loss. No one was in the building when the fire occurred.

5400 block of Columbia Road: March 15, someone attemptedto steal a 1991 Ford Explorer vehicle sometime before 11:55 p.m. from a residential parking lot. The would-be thief was unable to start the vehicle.

6200 block of Bright Plume: March 14, cash was reported stolen at 3 p.m. from a residence entered when someone kicked opena rear basement door.

5300 block of Brook Way: March 14, a 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier was reported stolen at 10:30 p.m. from an apartmentcomplex parking lot.

12200 block of Etchison Road: March 19, several pieces of jewelry were reported stolen at 8 p.m. from a home entered through a front window.

DATELINE: Elkridge

5800 block of Old Washington Boulevard: March 17, jewelry was stolen sometime before 7:45 p.m. from a home that was forcibly entered.

8600 block of Larkin Road: March 15, someone attempted to steala 1990 GMC van from a business parking lot sometime before 11:50 p.m.

DATELINE: Ellicott City

3000 block of Oak Green Circle: March 16, someone attempted to steal a 1987 Nissan Sentra from an apartment complex parking lot sometime before 11:50 p.m.
