Teacher Wins Award

March 24, 1991

WESTMINSTER — Colleen Gibbons Hoffmeister, an adjunct instructor at Carroll Community College, has received the Eleanor B. North Poetry Award for her poem, "Shadow Self."

The award carries a $500 prize. The poem, printed in The Rectangle, a literary publication sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta honor society, was judged by Nikki Giovanni, internationally acclaimed poet.

Giovanni called the poem wonderful and well deserving of honors. The work makes use of fresh images, she said.

"I responded immediately to the energy and poetic chances Hoffmeister was taking," said Giovanni. "I believe a poem is a story told on many levels and she carries us gently into the poem."

Hoffmeister, an Eldersburg resident, will be reading her works in Baltimore at the BAUhaus next month and at Artscape '91 this summer.

A 1988 graduate of CCC and a 1990 graduate of University of Baltimore, Hoffmeister teaches usage and style in the community college's English department.
