Area steeplechase season opens in Howard County

The Baltimore-area steeplechase season will start today when the Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds feature a nine-race, point-to-point program, highlighted by the 3-mile Howard County Cup.

Ivory Poacher, ridden by Charles Fenwick Jr., and Pacific Parley with Joe Gillet up, head the nine-horse Howard County Cup field.

In addition to the main race, there are three other timber races two flat races and three pony races at the Meriwether Farm course, located on Roxbury Road.

Post time for the first race is 1 p.m.

Concurrent with the Howard County meet is the start of th National Steeplechase and Hunt Association spring season, which will begin today in Aiken, S.C., and ends May 27 at Fair Hill, Md.

The following are the five other Baltimore-area steeplechases se for April:

* April 6: Elkridge-Harford Point-to-Point, Monkton.

* April 7: Marlborough Point-to-Point, Davidsonville.

* April 13: My Lady's Manor Point-to-Point, Monkton.

* April 20: Grand National Steeplechase, Butler.

9- * April 27: Maryland Hunt Cup, Glyndon.
