Coach's outlook: "We lost three players who did the bulk of our scoring, but the defense has returned intact, so I don't expect any less than we accomplished last year. I expect that the offense will have to come around, but I think our defense will carry us until it does. We open the season with a tough game against St. Mary's (Monday), so we'll know right where we are. I expect that we'll be (state title) contenders."

Anne Arundel County Sun's outlook: In the class 2A/1A, Southern may be competing in the state's toughest postseason title chase. In its pathwill be Harford County's four-time Class 1A state-regional champion Joppatowne, Baltimore County's defending state champion Loch Raven and perennial Howard County power Mount Hebron. The Bulldogs will have to overcome the losses of Kelly Archambo, Beth Chaney and Sam Hughes, who scored a combined 144 goals last year. Defenders Paul, Gladwell,Smith and Pluebell are a solid corps but will need support from Young (39 goals, 23 assists last year), a second-team All-County pick, and Barnett to win a state crown.
