A Woodland Pool

March 17, 1991

THIS MULTIPURPOSE SWIMMING POOL IN PRINCE George's County was designed and built by Sylvan Pools for a close-knit family that loves to entertain. A superbly planned balance of intimate and open spaces, inspired by the moodiness of the wooded site, allows seekers of solitude as well as more active types to enjoy the surroundings.

The gas-heated pool, in addition to having a raised spa at one end and a pool house, provides its owners with 20 feet by 40 feet of swimming area, long enough for lappers and wide enough for players. There is a deep end for diving aficionados and a shallow end for volleyball players.

Sylvan considered ease of maintenance when designing the pool, which is sited in the woods. Falling leaves and other debris are handled by an automatic vacuum and filter system that does not operate constantly but is attached to a timer. The solution is both economical and energy-efficient. Marbelite finishes require no painting, and the decorative pool tiles are made of Vitrus, a non-clay material that is glazed all the way through and will not crack in subfreezing temperatures.

The concrete coping, designed and manufactured by Sylvan, is an aesthetically weighty design element that provides an attractive balance to the poured concrete patio. In a pool area this flexible, entertaining a crowd is as easy as entertaining oneself.
