March 14, 1991|By Marty McGee

Live racing returns to Baltimore today with the opening of the spring meeting at Pimlico Race Course.

The $60,000 Mister Diz Stakes highlights the 10-race opening program; Gala Spinaway and Tank are the probable favorites. The track offers free grandstand admission and programs today.

Top race of the meet, as always, is the Preakness, to be run for the 116th time on May 18.

On May 11, the $750,000 Pimlico Special, fourth race in the American Championship Racing Series, will be contested. Top older horses such as Unbridled, Summer Squall, Farma Way and Jolie's Halo could compete.

Racing will be conducted on a five-day-a-week basis, with Mondays and Wednesdays dark. The track will be open two Mondays -- April 1 and May 27 -- and closed Easter, March 31.

The meet runs through July 2.

Weekday post time is 1 p.m., and weekend and holiday programs begin at 12:30 p.m..
