Farm Cooperative Meets

50 Years Ago (week of March 9-March 15, 1941): The Howard County National Farm Loan Association sponsored its annual meeting March 12 at the Ellicott City Court House. The association, one of three cooperative credit institutions then operating in the county, was run by and for farmers to enable them to obtain long-term farm mortgage credit on a cooperative basis. A representative of the Federal Land Bank in Baltimore attended the meeting to answer questions about Federal Land Bank loans.

* This week the Sporting Dog Association of Maryland began its spring field trial season at an event held on the Carroll family property in Ellicott City. Features of the event included the Open Puppy Stake, the Open-Age Stake and, a local favorite, the Open Gun Stake.


25 Years Ago (week of March 6-March 12, 1966): Dr. Bruce Brumbaugh of Elkridge was named "Man of the Year" this week by the Elkridge Kiwanis Club. The doctor was feted at a dinner attended by more than 60 members and guests of the Kiwanis and was presented with a plaque by Kiwanis president Don Boteler. Dr. Brumbaugh had served as family physician to most of Elkridge since just after World War I. At that point in his career he had delivered more than 1,000 babies.

* J. Thomas Nissel was named Howard County State's Attorney by Judge James Macgill and T. Hunt Mayfield. He was scheduled to begin his new dutiesApril 1, the effective date for the resignation of his predecessor, Cornelius F. Sybert Jr. A resident of Ellicott City since 1964, Nissel had previously worked as an attorney to the State Roads Commission.
