Rossville Medical Center to hold grand opening

The Rossville Medical Center, a four-story office condominium at 1232 Race Road, will have its grand opening Friday with an open house from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Kelly Clayton & Mojzisek is the architect for the building, which is close to Franklin Square Hospital and the Beltway. Seven of the 12 units in the building already have been sold by the developers, the Race Road Limited Partnership. Boudreau/Roche Construction was the general contractor.

Baltimore's Architectural Review Board saw plans last week for what is likely to be the first building constructed within the $350 million Inner Harbor East community: a 6,800-square-foot "Marina House" for a 204-slip marina planned as part of the project.

Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut and Whitelaw of New York is the architect for the two-story building, which would rise on the waterfront where the lower Jones Falls empties into Baltimore's harbor.

Circular in shape and marked by a clock tower, the building would contain dressing areas and lockers for boaters and offices for the people who will oversee operations of the marina. According to Gilbane project manager Russ Lindquist, construction is likely to begin later this year, after an operator is selected for the marina, and be complete by spring of 1992.

Mr. Lindquist said an all-suite hotel that was announced for the Inner Harbor East development last fall is also in the design stage but construction is unlikely to begin before the Marina House project.

Around the region:

* The Johns Hopkins University held a dedication ceremony yesterday for the Jean R. and Allan L. Berman Auditorium, a 222-seat meeting hall that Hopkins has added to its Downtown Center at Charles and Saratoga streets. Ziger, Hoopes and Snead was the architect for the project, which was completed within the shell of the old Tower Theatre. Hopkins' School of Continuing Studies also has built new offices and meeting rooms above the Berman Auditorium, which is available for lease to community groups and others seeking downtown meeting space.

* The University of Maryland has narrowed from nine to four the number of architectural teams under consideration to design a $70 million medical tower planned for the northwest corner of Lombard and Greene streets. The teams are headed by: Zeidler Roberts Partnership; Columbia Design Collective and Payette Associates; Ellerbe Becket with Pei Cobb Freed and Partners; and a joint venture of RTKL Associates and Peterson and Brickbauer. A decision is expected soon.

* Gage Menswear has leased 7,000 square feet of retail space in the Valley Centre, 9616 Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills, where it plans to open its second Baltimore area store on March 23. Its first is at 200 W. Baltimore St. KMS Group is the developer of Valley Centre.

* The Business Center at Riverside, a 45,000 square foot industrial/flexible space building at 1362 Brass Mill Road in Harford County's Riverside Business Park, has passed the halfway point in leasing. Tenants include Desa Shoe Co.; California Microwave, Allcare Home Therapy Providers and Springdale Construction Co. Multi-Properties Inc. was the developer and Gerard A. Baxter Inc. was the architect. Scott Skogmo of W. C. Pinkard & Co. is the leasing agent.

* Nancy Foreman Design was the interior designer and space planner for the recently-completed conversion of the former Servamation building, a 30,000-square-foot structure at 803 Gleneagles Court near Towson, to new headquarters for the asphalt paving and highway construction firm of Ratrie Robbins & Schweizer; an affiliate, Bituminous Construction Inc.; and its parent, Bryn Awel Corp. The $3.2 million project is a joint venture of Bryn Awel and P. F. Obrecht and Son.

* Ramsay, Scarlett & Co., Inc., one of Baltimore's oldest steamship agencies, has moved its corporate offices from 19 South St. to the Equitable Building at 10 N. Calvert St. Ramsay, Scarlett Travel, a full service travel agency, accompanied its parent in the move. Bryon Mollica of Kayne Levin Neilson Bavar represented Ramsay, Scarlett & Co., and Steve Gassaway of Coldwell Banker represented the landlord.

* Chase Bank of Maryland leased 21,548 square feet for its mortgage processing center at 11011 McCormick Road, the former headquarters of McCormick Properties. Charles Johnson of the Rouse Co. negotiated the transaction.

* Duvall/Hendricks Inc. of Baltimore and Washington recently completed the design of 46,000 square feet of new corporate office space in Virginia for Ernst & Young.

* D. R. Brasher, an architectural and planning firm headed by Ron Brasher, has moved to the Equitable Bank Center, 10320 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia.

* W. C. Pinkard & Co. has assumed leasing and management of the Woodmere I and II office buildings in Columbia. Aetna Life Insurance Co. of Hartford, Conn., the original lender to developer Peter G. Issel, bought the buildings last year at a foreclosure auction and has decided to keep them as part of its real estate portfolio, according to leasing agent L. Jamie Smith of Pinkard. The buildings are 87 percent leased, he said.
