Channel 11 shows pairings

Channel 11 showed a nice transition game yesterday.

After deciding to skip the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament selection show in favor of its local newscast, the station ended up carrying the pairings.

Channel 11 quickly broke away from the news to CBS' program, picking up the NCAA bracket announcement as made by Greg Gumbel. WBAL stayed with CBS until the pairings were complete, missing a few moments after coming back late from a commercial and then breaking away from the network for a live shot from Towson State, where the basketball team and fans reacted to the Tigers' drawing No. 1 seed Ohio State.

Channel 11 sports anchor Gerry Sandusky said station management decided yesterday morning it would carry the selection show during the newscast.

"Vince [Bagli], Butch [Alsandor] and I had done all we could to get them to reconsider," Sandusky said of his sports colleagues. Because WBAL's switchboard is shut down during the weekend, it wasn't clear how many complaints the station received, Sandusky said.

Alsandor was booed at Towson's student union before he relayed the news of Channel 11's programming change, Sandusky said, and then Alsandor was cheered.
