Davies takes Inamori; Barrett falls to fourth
POWAY, Calif. -- England's Laura Davies shot a 5-under-par 67 and won the Inamori Classic by four strokes over Judy Dickinson and Lynn Connelly at the StoneRidge Country Club in this northern San Diego County community.
Third-round leader Tina Barrett, of Baltimore, who played in the last group with Davies and Robin Walton, had her worst round of the week, a 1-over-par 73, after earlier tours of 70-69-70. She had been tied with Dickinson and Connelly, but bogeyed the last hole, a 173-yard par-3, to fall back into a tie with Robin Walton at 6-under 282.
Davies, 27, won the fourth tournament of her four-year Ladies Professional Golf Association career -- and first since the 1989 Lady Keystone Open in Hershey, Pa. -- by completing four rounds with an 11-under-par total of 277.
Connelly matched Davies' 67, making seven birdies against two bogeys, to finish at 281 with Dickinson, who shot a 69.
Dickinson, a 13-year LPGA veteran, birdied Nos. 1 and 7 to charge into contention as she headed into the final nine on the 6,197-yard course.
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Steve Pate withstood 35 mph wind to shoot a 75, good enough for a three-stroke victory.
The wind was so strong that Curtis Strange shot what is believed to be the highest score of his 15-year pro career, an 86.
