Terps rally to beat VCU, 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Maryland (3-5-1) overcame a 2-1 deficit with a three-run rally in the third inning, and pitchers Matt Baumann and Charles Devereux made the lead stand up for a 4-3 triumph over Virginia Commonwealth University (9-2) yesterday. VCU had won a Saturday meeting, 7-3.

Shawn Knott was one of four Terrapins with two hits, one of which was a triple, and he drove in three runs. Todd Nutter, Chris Smoot and Drew Johnson also had two hits. Reliever Devereux yielded just one hit over the last three innings and struck out three.

Towson St. 7, Delaware St. 3

Towson State (1-2), which had lost at Delaware State (6-1) Saturday, 21-16, spotted the Hornets a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then came back with six runs of its own in the first two innings at Burdick Field. Jon Eichner and Chris Weaver hit two-run homers in the second.

Bob Mumma's third hit and second home run of the game was a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning, carrying the University of Maryland Baltimore County (5-2) past Iona College (2-1) in the first game of a Retrievers doubleheader.

UMBC scored five runs against Coppin State (0-6) in the first inning of the nightcap, limited to seven innings.

EMMITSBURG -- Mount St. Mary's (2-6) used eight hits and two Shepherd (1-3) errors to score nine in the sixth inning, overcoming a 5-2 deficit. Ken Keith, who has hit safely in seven consecutive games, and Chip Bachtell produced two-run singles the rally. Mike MacMillian had three hits.
