Towson breezes in opener, 18-9

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Rob Shek (Bel Air) and Michael DeSimone each scored three goals yesterday, as No. 5-ranked Towson State beat Villanova, 18-9, in the season opener for both teams.

The Tigers took a 5-2 lead in the first quarter and held a five-goal advantage by halftime.

Towson's Richard Betcher, a junior-college transfer, made 15 saves.

John Blatchley (Loyola) had two goals and three assists for the Tigers, and Doug Sharretts (Boys' Latin) and Donald Connolly each had two goals and an assist.

Travis Boone (Dulaney) and Joe Genovese each added two scores.

Towson State will play host to No. 8 Maryland, a 13-11 winner over Duke yesterday, next Saturday at 1 p.m.
