Montreal Expos -- Agreed to terms with 3B Tim Wallach (.296, 21 HRs, 98 RBI) on 2-year contract extension through 1994. Wallach will be paid $1,725,000 this year, and the deal would be worth approximately $11 million if an option for 1995 is exercised.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Announced that P Ken Howell (8-7, 4.64 ERA) will require surgery to remove bone spur on right shoulder and will be out until at least June. Invited new-look free-agent P Dave LaPoint (7-10, 4.11 with New York Yankees) to spring training as non-roster player.


K? Denver Nuggets -- Signed G Jim Farmer to a 10-day contract.


L Arkansas State -- Named Roger Carr assistant football coach.

Navy -- Named outside-linebackers coach Dick Biddle defensive coordinator and Tim McGuire, defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois the past 5 years, to defensive staff.

North Carolina -- Named Chad Ashton assistant men's soccer coach.

Old Dominion -- Fired basketball coach Tom Young (524-328 in 31 years at Catholic, American, Rutgers and Old Dominion).

Queens -- Don Lizak (78-137) resigned after 8 years as basketball coach.


Buffalo Bills -- Announced the retirement of RB Robb Riddick.

=1 Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed WR Ryan Bethea.


Detroit Red Wings -- Announced that LW Gerard Gallant (10 goals, 16 assists) will undergo back surgery next week to remove a bone spur and will miss the remainder of the season.

Vancouver Canucks -- Sent F Cam Brown (0 points in 1 game) and F Andrew McBain (5 assists in 13 games) to Milwaukee (IHL).
