By winning the Class 4A/3A state title Saturday at Western MarylandCollege, Old Mill not only joined an elite class of three-time statechampion teams, but the Patriots kept the title in Anne Arundel County for the fourth straight year.
Other than the Patriots, who wererunners-up to champion Broadneck in 1988, only Aberdeen and Beall High school -- both Class 2A/1A -- had ever accomplished the feat.
Beall shared its first title in 1982 and Aberdeen was the first team to win three straight titles outright.
Old Mill, which competed in a 62-team field, is the first Class 4A/3A school to do it. The Patriots also scored a tournament-record 130.5 points, breaking the old record -- 113 -- set by Bowie in 1980.
