Newsletter gives air, hotel info Business travel

Travel Smarter, a new monthly newsletter, provides some hard-to-obtain information that could save airline passengers as much as 50 percent on regular air fares and save all travelers 40 percent on hotel rates.

The newsletter publishes listings of forthcoming conventions in more than two dozen major meeting and business centers, and tells readers how to take advantage of low group air-fare and hotel-room rates associated with the conventions.

Most convention groups arrange for group air fares that are at least 30 percent to 40 percent below full coach fares. Often, the group fares are 50 percent off, or pegged at 5 percent below the lowest air fare for which a passenger can qualify, if that is a super-saver fare.

To qualify for the discounts, one does not have to be a member of the group to which the hotel or air-fare reductions are offered, according to newsletter publisher Paul Edwards.

The group air fares usually will be available to the city where the meeting is scheduled from any other U.S. city. The first issue of Travel Smarter lists 319 meetings, along with associated discounts for airlines, hotels, motels and rental cars, Edwards said.

Subscriptions are $95 a year. More information is available from Edwards at Travel Smarter, 88 Bleecker St., New York, N.Y. 10012, or by calling (212) 254-1069.
