Host Mount Hebron became the third Howard County team to qualify for the state basketball semifinals by routing Towson, 78-53, last night in the girls Class 2A, Region II championship game.
The second-ranked Vikings (21-3) used pressure to create turnovers early and led Towson (20-3), 22-6, after the first quarter.
"Our defensive pressure really caused them problems," said Vikings coach Dave Greenberg. "We went after them from the beginning with full-court pressure, and they really had trouble handling it."
Mount Hebron's Erica McCauley led the charge with a game-high 25 points, including three first-half three-pointers and no turnovers.
"In the first half, it was all our game," she said. "We were really hitting our outside shots. After halftime, [Towson] tried to stop us with a triangle-and-two, but we were able to get the ball inside for layups.
