March 03, 1991

Amy Kuehnl scored 16 points to lead host Catonsville (21-3) to a 49-44 victory over Bel Air (17-6) in the Class 3A, Region III final yesterday.

The Comets will play in the state semifinals at Catonsville Community College Thursday at either 7 or 9 p.m.

Catonsville's man-to-man press forced 30 turnovers. "We figured could press them," said Catonsville coach Dennis Quinby. "We knew they wanted to go inside to their big girl (6-0 center Dawn St. Clair), but we thought their guards would have trouble with the pressure, and they did."

In other regional finals:

Crystal Smith scored 13 points and Shelly McLain added 12, as Brunswick defeated host Milford Mill (15-5) for the Class 1A, Region I title. Yolanda Matthews led Milford Mill with 12 points.

Holly Scott's 25 points led host Kent (17-5) to a 53-48 overtime victory over Joppatowne (13-9) in the Class 1A, Region III championship. Thori Staples and Candy Collier each scored 15 for Joppatowne, which was held scoreless in the overtime period.

Second-seeded Glenelg (17-6) returned to the Class 2A state semifinals at Catonsville Community College after a one-year absence with a 57-42 victory over top-seeded Watkins Mill (18-4) in the Region I final. The Gladiators were the Class 2A state runners-up in 1989.
