Aberdeen's Mat Reign Ends In Regionals

Aberdeen's five-year hold on the regional championship came to an end last month when the Eagles lost the title to Owings Mills.

The Harford County champs finished second to Owings Mills, the Baltimore County champs, 230-158.5, in the Class 1A/2A Region II Tournament at Overlea High School on Feb. 16.

On the same day, Bel Air finished 11th and C. Milton Wright 12th at the Class 3A/4A Region I Tournament won by North Carroll at Westminster High School.

In the Class 1A/2A meet, Edgewood finished third with 105 points while North Harford was fifth (65); Harford Vo-Tech, seventh (58); Havre de Grace, ninth (45.5); and Fallston, tenth (43).

Matt Slutzky, Danny Osorio and Zack Fowl won individual regional titles for the Eagles, but Owings Mills had five champions. While Aberdeen landed four wrestlers in the finals, Owings Mills had nine. Aberdeen had five wrestlers finish in the top three while Owings Millshad 11.

Slutzky (28-1), a two-time state champ, had little trouble winning his third regional title in the 135-pound class. The juniorwon the preliminary rounds by forfeit and default before taking the title by a technical fall over Patapsco's Mike Bishoff.

Senior Osorio, who finished second in the state last year, remained unbeaten in29 matches at 140 pounds. He took a 10-5 decision over Mike Brammer of Loch Raven in the championship.

At 103 pounds, Fowl (27-2) pinned Gary Harris of Owings Mills in 5:49. Also in the finals, Todd Jones finished second by default.

Three other Harford County wrestlersalso won championships. Havre de Grace's Jimmy Ervine won the title at 119 pounds with a 4-0 decision over Owings Mills' Cory Setlen.

Edgewood's Keith Spurlin won at 152 pounds with a 10-3 decision over Dave Crickard of Chesapeake. North Harford's Dan Gunn pinned Havre deGrace's Tom Burdsall in 3:48 to win the 160-pound title.

Edgewood's Mike Bunker and Brian Kocur also reached the finals as did Lance Sims, Harford Vo-Tech. All three fell to Owings Mills wrestlers.

Bunker lost to Gregg Kessler by technical fall at 125 while Kocur losta 10-1 decision to Grant Johnson at 130. Sims lost a 15-6 decision to Sigismund Frasier at 171 pounds.

Fourth-place finishers includedFallston's Tom Brazier (103) and Eddie Perez (152), North Harford's Matt Petza (140) and HVT's Brian Johnson (135) and Jason Snyder (160).

In the Class 3A meet, Bel Air's Scott Birth was the only wrestler to reach the finals. At 119 pounds, Birth fell to North Carroll's Tommy Dell by a 10-2 decision.

Bel Air's Rob Smallwood placed thirdat 152 pounds.
