Kelly Injury Cancels, March 5 Smith Bout

February 27, 1991

After an arm injury in a sparring session Friday, doctors have instructed Brooklyn Park resident and heavyweight boxer Butch Kelly (6-2, 5 KO's) not to fight his scheduled March 4 six-rounder against Washington's Cecil Smith on the undercard of the Eddie Van Kirk-Vincent Pettway fight card at the Baltimore Arena.

A heavy puncher, Kelly said the injury to his right arm prevents him from using "all of my power because of the torn muscle in the bicep."

"Of course, I feel bad because I've done a lot of training and I'm ready for the fight, mentally and physically," said Kelly. "I'll bein the gym. I just won't be able to use the arm as much. I hope to be back in the ring in a month."
