NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Derrick Reid scored 21 points and Jim Frantz added 19, as visiting University of Maryland Baltimore County defeated Central Connecticut State, 81-76, in an East Coast Conference basketball game last night.
UMBC (5-21, 4-8) held a 68-66 lead with just under four minutes remaining when Frantz, a 6-foot-10 senior forward, made two foul shots then stole Central Connecticut's inbounds attempt and made a dunk that put the Retrievers up by six.
The Blue Devils (4-22, 2-10) got to within 74-71 at the two-minute mark, but UMBC went on a five-point run to put the game out of reach.
Central Connecticut's Kevin Swann led all scorers with 37 points, and Derell Thompson and Brian Watkins each scored 17 for UMBC.
The win guarantees the Retrievers a fifth-place finish in the ECC.
