Catonsville rallies to stay unbeaten Boys basketball

Catonsville (22-0, 20-0) is just getting accustomed to wearing the crown as Baltimore County 3A-4A champion, but the deposed kings were not willing subjects last night.

Host Woodlawn (13-7, 13-6) outplayed the Comets for 30 minutes, but couldn't withstand a rally by Catonsville that saw the visitors escape with a 53-48 win and an undefeated regular season.

Teron Owens led the Comets with 17 points and Larry Bacon led Woodlawn with 12.

This is the first time a Catonsville team has gone undefeated in the regular season since 1961, a season that saw the Comets go 18-0, and leaves them one win short of the school mark for a season set by the 1982-83 team that lost in the state Class 3A finals.

"Tonight was a gut check for us," said Catonsville coach Art Gamzon. "They gave us all we could handle, but we hung together and pulled it out. We refused to quit, and there were times we could have."
