Project turns school into housing for the elderly

Renovation and construction work has begun to turn the former Betsy Ross School at 400 Millington Ave., into a 101-unit apartment for elderly residents.

The $4.5 million project will include renovations of the existing building and construction of a four-story addition. The existing building is 24,500 square feet and the new addition will have 34,500 square feet. Altogether, the project will have 60,000 square feet of living space.

The owner of the project is Bon Secours Hospital and the project will be called the Bon Secours' Benet House. The architect is Cochran Stephenson & Donkervoet of Baltimore.

Harkins Builders is providing the construction work that includes restoration of the masonry facade, reconstruction of existing wood and steel windows and major restoration to the school's interior and exterior. The east wing of the building was built in 1892. The west wing was constructed in 1932.

The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of the year.


Columbia-FreeState Health System has expanded into Frederick County with the opening of the West Frederick Medical Center.

The center is a 4,800-square-foot primary care facility located in the Hill Crest Shopping Center. Services that will be available include cardiology; ear, nose and throat care; general, thoracic and vascular surgery; neurology; orthopedics; gastroenterology; psychiatry; obstetrics and urology.

The owner of the free-standing building is Southern Management Co. Columbia Design Collective of Columbia was the project architect and South Carroll Contractors Inc. of Sykesville was the contractor.

With the move into Frederick, Columbia-FreeState now offers medical services to 10 counties and Baltimore City.


Following are some recent commercial real estate transactions:

* First Dearborn Life Insurance Co. has leased 1,550 square feet in the Foxleigh Building, located at 2330 W. Joppa Road, according to KLNB.

* Glass Block of Baltimore, a distributor of glass block for residential and commercial construction, has leased 4,400 square feet at 4800 Benson Ave., according to KLNB.
