Margaret Hiroko-Smith, 41, of Vienna, Va., became the race's only four-time winner in the District of Columbia's 30th annual Washington's Birthday Marathon on Sunday at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Greenbelt.

Hiroko-Smith, who finished the race in 3 hours, 30 minutes, 7 seconds, beat defending champion Renee Butler, 30, by three seconds. Hiroko-Smith had won the race in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

John Ausherman, 35, of Chambersburg, Pa., won the male division in 2:39:34.

The race was the first of at least four marathons in Maryland this year. The Last Train to Boston Marathon will take place at the Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground on March 2. The Tri-Maryland Triathlon Club will hold the Crystal Geyser Marathon on Nov. 24, and the Baltimore Road Runners Club is planning the North Central Trails Marathon in the fall.
