The old, abandoned Acme Market building in Woodbrook, once a bustling part of the community, may soon undergo a face-lift and regain its vitality if a local businesswoman has her way.

Nancy Schaffer, co-owner of Eddie's Super Markets of Roland Park and president of Roland Park-Victor's Market Inc., has purchased the nearly 17,000-square-foot building for an undisclosed amount from its previous owner, Giant Food Inc.

The building in the 6200 block of N. Charles St. was closed in 1982 as part of Acme's 20-store close-out in the Baltimore area after it had failed to reach an agreement on wage concessions with two unions.

Giant Food bought the building about six years ago, said Barry Scher, the company's vice president of public affairs. He said the store "simply didn't meet our plans. And it does not meet our plans for the future."

In mid-November, the site again was placed on the market and Schaffer's bid was accepted Nov. 30, she said. Yesterday, the building stood lifeless and dirty as the sun beamed on the front windows.

If Schaffer gets her way, the building will shine forever, which draws applause from some local merchants.

Right now, Schaffer says, "I'm thrilled. It's a wonderful piece of property." But, she said, "I don't know what I'm opening yet."

"Maybe a super market like what I have now," Schaffer said. "A lot of it depends on what I find in the research."

Schaffer said she hopes to open something there in the early fall after a retail market analysis is done to determine what may be best-suited for the site.

Meanwhile, local merchants are happy to see something comingalthough some remain cautious about a new competitor.

"I think it's great," said Scott Fahdt, 28, manager of the nearby Citgo gas station. "It'll be good for the merchants in the area."
