Welcome to the Chinese New Year!

The Meridian Nursing Home, Hammonds Lane, will be celebrating with a party beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday. The party will feature Chinese food, decor and music.

A video of China will also be shown. Family and friends are welcome to come enjoy the festivities.


Brooklyn Park Elementary news: The school will kick off this year's Battle of the Books at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

The program will explain all the rules and will include a mock battle using the teachers as participants. The Oriole Bird will make a special appearance to help encourage students to read forthe Battle of the Books.

The real battle between participating schools will be in May.

* Looking for an easy way to do some Easter shopping? Students will begin selling Easter candy and novelties tomorrow and continue until Feb. 22. Items begin at $2.

A special "Poseys and Baskets" program, in which participants grow their own plants, is also available. Contact a student at the school for more information.


Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle Junior High news: Applications are due Friday for the music camp sponsored by county public schools at Arlington Echo and West River.

The camp for band students is slated for July 7 to 12, for chorus students on July 14 to 19, andfor string students on Aug. 18 to 23. All camps are for grades six through 12.

* An Open House/Course Information Night for parents of sixth-, seventh-and eighth-graders is set for 7 tonight.

The program for parents of incoming sixth-graders will be in the auditorium, while the parents of seventh-and eighth-graders should report to the cafeteria. Everyone is asked to car pool because of limited parking.


Park Elementary news: The next PTO meeting is set for 7 p.m. tomorrow. A speaker from TheAnne Arundel County Sun will be present to discuss reading activities that parents can enjoy at home with their children.

* The "Just Say No" club will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday. Counselors from Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle Junior High will be visiting sixth-grade students at 1 p.m. Friday.


North County High news: Report cards will be distributed tomorrow.

* Congratulations to North County's "It's Academic" team for coming in second during its recent appearance. The school was represented by team captain Anna Rohleder, Heather Brewer and Kevin Lascola. Mike Chearney and John Seno were alternates.

The team competed against Randallstown and Dundalk high schools. North County was leading in points for more than half the contest but lost ground on the final grab-bag round.

The school band and cheerleaders accompanied the team to the taping. The show will be aired Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon on Channel 13. Be sure to watch.

The school will have its spring physicals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the gymnasium.


Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church will have a special Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The church will begin a Lenten Study on Central America from 7 to 8:30 p.m.Sunday in the education building. These sessions will last for six Sundays.


The Belle Grove Improvement Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Belle Grove Elementary School in the library.

Please note: Meetings will now be scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. At this month's meeting, discussion will include the Easter egg hunt, community yard sale, flea market, bakesale, Dumpsters and spring community clean-up.

Membership dues are still being accepted at $5 per household. Anyone paying dues before the March meeting will be eligible for the drawing for a lifetime membership. Please renew your membership and ask a friend or neighbor to join also.


Don't forget to join in the celebration of BlackHistory Month as the Lloyd Keaser Community Center continues its Friday night entertainment. This Friday, Feb. 15, the center has been turned into a marketplace for you to enjoy. Come out and see the African art, jewelry, fashion, food, song and dance. The festivities begin at 7:30 p.m.


St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church will sponsor a parish bingo beginning at 7:45 p.m. Friday in the school hall. Come on out and bring a friend.

* Have you ever wondered what happened to some of your old classmates or thought it would be nice to see themagain? The St. Rose of Lima Alumni Association is sponsoring a "RockAround the Clock" dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, March 2.

Music will be provided by DJ Rick Thompson, playing songs from the 1950s and 1960s, with some Top-40 and 1970s music thrown in. Tickets are $10 per person and can be obtained by calling 355-5338 or 355-0997.

This is a perfect opportunity to renew old acquaintances and havean enjoyable evening.


Harbor Hospital will sponsor the fifth annual Myers Memorial 8K Run Sunday, March 3. Commemorative T-shirtswill be given to all starters at the race, and prizes will be presented. If you prefer to jog or walk, the Myers Mile Fun Run is set for the grounds of the Myers Pavilion.
