Bid for 300 game misses at Country Club

Quinton Cates came within a whisker of a 300 game in the Starfires League at Country Club Lanes last week. Cates left the 10 pin on his final ball and ended with a 299. He also had games of 225 and 193 for a 717 set.

Other top efforts in the Starfires League included: Allen Boykin, 237-217-267--721, and Kenny Lane, 290-225-188--703. In the Monday Men's Handicap League: Scott Tennyson, 170-258-289--717; Jeff Doll, 276; and Keith Howard, 268.

Baltimore Men's Classic League: Paul Manuel, 253-218-278--749; Larry Detweiler, 224-279-244--747; Robby Lemerise, 236-255-246--737; John Morris, 205-258-266--729; Jim Conkel, 228-257-242--727; and Jim Collins, 234-248-233--715.

Scratch Triples League: Mark Pannayis, 280-259-246-259--1,044; Mike Tanner, 248-266-239-215--968; John Morris, 221-278-224-235--958; and Curt Pezzano, 257-257-216-223--953.

Bill Deshong rolled a 290 game in the TGIF League. Scott Poe, 216-258-279--753; Chuck Tillman, 216-247-268--731; and Brian Thacker, 228-234-258--720, had big nights in the Minors League.

Kevin Leist rolled a 258-257-237--752 in the Thursday Night Mixed League, and Chrystal Foster had a 267 game. Jackie McKenzie rolled a 245.

Rick Johnson rolled a 279 game in the Baltimore Industrial League at Fair Lanes Towson.

The Greater Baltimore Bowling Association will hold its 39th City Championship Tournament the first three weekends in March at Fair Lanes Kings Point in Randallstown. Team, doubles and singles events will be held.

The Brunswick Gold Medal Classic Collegiate Scholarship Tournament will be held Feb. 16-17 at Brunswick Crown Lanes in the Hawthorne Shopping Center, Middle River.

Essex Community College is the defending women's champion, and Penn State won last year's men's title.

The fourth Pro Spot Qualifier for the $150,000 PBA Open, set for Fair Lanes Kings Point Feb. 24-March 2, will be held today at Fair Lanes University in Adelphi.
