Baseball Atlanta Braves -- Agreed to 1-year contract with P Pete Smith 4.79 ERA) for $365,000, plus $45,000 in bonuses, a raise of $175,000. He had sought $450,000 in arbitration, and Braves had offered him $290,000. Agreed to 1-year contracts with minor-leaguers P Matt Turner, P Turk Wendell and OF Andy Tomberlin.

Boston Red Sox -- Agreed to 4-year contract with OF Mike Greenwell (.297, 14 HRs, 73 RBI) for $12 million. He earned $1.225 million on second year of 2-year contract in 1990. He had filed for $2.8 million in arbitration, and Red Sox had countered with $2 million.

California Angels -- Signed P Kirk McCaskill (12-11, 3.25) to 1-year contract for $2.1 million, a raise of $1.1 million. He had asked for $2.4 million in arbitration, and Angels had offered $1.65 million. Announced that P Cliff Young (1-1, 3.52) and P Jeff Richardson (1 game) agreed to 1-year contracts.

Cincinnati Reds -- Signed SS Barry Larkin (.301, 7, 67) to 1-year contract for $2.1 million, a raise of $1.3 million. Larkin had asked for $2,425,000 in arbitration, and Reds had offered $1.5 million.

Detroit Tigers -- Signed P Mike Henneman (8-6, 3.05 ERA , 22 saves) to 1-year contract for $1.1 million, a raise of $765,000. He had sought $1.25 million through arbitration, and Tigers had offered $900,000.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Agreed to 1-year contracts with OF Mickey Brantley, OF Darryl Hamilton (.295, 1, 18), P Chris Bosio (4-9, 4.00; missed most of second half of season with bone spurs in knee), P Mark Lee (1-0, 2.11 in 21 innings) and C Tim McIntosh (.200 in 5 at-bats).

Montreal Expos -- Agreed to terms with OF Otis Nixon (.251, 50 SB) on 1-year contract for $585,000, a raise of $270,000.

New York Yankees -- Acquired Class AA OF Mike Humphreys from San Diego as player to be named in deal that sent OF Oscar Azocar to Padres in December. Added Humphreys to 40-man roster and designated P Dave LaPoint (7-10, 4.12) for assignment.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Signed P Bill Landrum (7-3, 2.13, 13 saves) to 1-year contract for undisclosed sum. Landrum had asked for $990,000 in arbitration, and club had offered $700,000.

Basketball

USA Basketball -- Named Randy Ayers and Don Monson assistant coaches for 1991 USA Pan American Games men's team.

World Basketball League -- Announced that Boca Raton, Fla., has been awarded franchise for 1991 season.

College

California -- Announced that AD Dave Maggard is leaving to take same job with University of Miami, Fla.

Football

Indianapolis Colts -- Agreed to contract with coach Ron Meyer since becoming coach Dec. 1, 1986) that would be worth $2 million to $3 million over four seasons if incentives are met.

New England Patriots -- Announced resignation of public relations director Jimmy Oldham, who had been criticized in November in NFL special counsel report after Boston Herald reporter Lisa Olson was sexually harassed in locker room.

New York-New Jersey Knights (WLAF) -- Named Joe Haering assistant coach.
