Buckle Up For Your Children's Safety

February 08, 1991

Maryland State Police are joining federal, state and local highway safety experts for National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, Feb. 10-16, with the theme "It's as simple as ABC (Always Buckle Children)."

The theme underscores the life-saving benefits of properly securing and positioning children in child safety seats. The majority of the seven child deaths recorded on Maryland highways last year could have been prevented if the child had been properly secured.

In Anne Arundel County, the Broadneck Jaycees are sponsoring a "Buckle Up For Love" Children's Carnival in conjunction with the observance of National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, from 1-4 p.m.Saturday, Feb. 16, at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold.

The carnival will feature a clown and prizes will be given away to participants.

Maryland State Police remind county parents that a sudden stop can throw a child around a vehicle with the force equivalent to dropping the child from a third floor window. Police are encouraging residents to perform a three point safety check before transporting children in vehicles.

Maryland's Child Safety Seat Law requires children under 3 years of age to be restrained in an approved child safety seat. Children three to five must be positioned or secured in asafety seat, or fastened properly with a seat belt or seat belt and shoulder harness.

Information: Broadneck Jaycees, 757-1675 or State Police 653-4275.
