A Mass of Christian burial for James Joseph Devine Jr., who retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer and worked as a government communications specialist, will be offered at 11 a.m. today at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 101 Church Lane, Pikesville.
Mr. Devine, who was 65 and a Pikesville resident, died of cancer Tuesday at the Fort Howard Veterans Administration Hospital.
Before his retirement in June, he worked as a cryptographer for the Department of Energy in Germantown and for a contractor.
He retired from the Navy as a communications technician in 1963 after 20 years' service.
A member of the Fleet Reserve Association in Rockville, he also was a contributor to the Naval Memorial in Washington.
A native of Hartford, Conn., he had been a resident of Rockville for many years before moving 10 years ago to Pikesville.
