Navy Airman Henry Q. Zecher, son of Meredith and Robert Mancini Jr. of Laurel, recently returned from deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence, homeported in San Diego.
Operation Desert Storm is the largest deployment of U.S. military forces since the Vietnam War.
Zecher, who joined the Navy in July 1988, is a 1988 graduate of Laurel High School.
HASTINGS AWARDED ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL
SpecialistJohn M. Hastings, son of James Hastings of Sykesville, has been decorated with the U.S. Army Achievement Medal.
The medal is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.
Hastings, a 1988 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School, is a mobile radio transmission equipment operator at Fort Hood, Texas.
SUGGS COMMISSIONED FOR FLEET MARINES
Marine 2ndLt. Karl E. Suggs, a 1983 graduate of Centennial High School, has graduated from the Basic School, located at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, in Quantico, Va.
While attending the school, Suggs was prepared as a newly commissioned officer for assignment to theFleet Marine Force.
The 26-week course includes instruction on land navigation, marksmanship, tactics, military law and the techniquesof military instruction.
Suggs, who joined the Marine Corps in June 1987, is a 1987 graduate of the University of Baltimore with a bachelor of science degree.
SEAMAN RECRUIT BOOTH COMPLETES TRAINING
Navy Seaman Recruit Nicole E. Booth, daughter of William and RobertaBooth of Highland, has completed instruction at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.
During Booth's eight-week training cycle, she studied seamanship, close order drill, naval history and first aid.
She joined the Navy in September 1990.
LIBERTY GRADUATE AT AIR FORCE BASE
Airman Shane A. Maloney, son of Joyce Yonke of Eldersburg, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force's electrical power production course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.
Maloney was taught to operate and maintain electrical power generation equipment.
He also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
The airman is a 1990 graduate of Liberty High School.
BEST COMPLETES MP INSTRUCTION
Pvt. William A. Best III, son of William and Janice Best of Mount Airy, has completed basicmilitary police training at Fort McClellan, Anniston, Ala.
Students were trained to provide support to the battlefield by conducting battlefield circulation control, area security, prisoner-of-war and civilian internee operations.
Also included in the course was training in peacetime support to the military command through security of resources and crime prevention programs.
Best is a 1990 graduate ofLinganore High School.
DIXON TAUGHT FIELD ARTILLERY OFFICER COURSE
2nd Lt. Robert M. Dixon, son of Richard H. Dixon of Sykesville, has completed the field artillery officer basic course at Fort Sill, Okla.
During the instruction, he was taught the basic techniques inartillery and was introduced to new weapons systems and doctrine.
Dixon, a 1986 graduate of Liberty High School, is a 1990 graduate ofWestern Maryland College.
