Steve Rologas Wins 15k Race

February 03, 1991

Although he strayed off course three times, Steve Rologas beat his nearest competitor, David Brightwell, by more than 35 seconds in the men's 15-kilometer race at Jeffers Hill last Sunday.

The Baltimorean crossed the finish line in 55 minutes, 17 seconds.

Rologas leaped to an early lead but says he got lost several times because pedestrians walking dogs blocked his view of the course arrows marking the 15K route.

He astonished runners at the 5K turnaround by coming up behind them when he should have already been in front of them.

The 15K race produced some fast times, with six finishers breaking the 60-minute mark.

Ben Matthews, 53, posted a time of59:08, just a day after returning from a 10K race in Florida.

In the men's 10K, Craig Chasse held off challenges from George Altieri and Seth Brown.

All three shared the lead at some point, but Chassefinished strongly in a winning time of 36:00.

GeriAnn Bell won the women's 10K in 42:08, finishing nearly three minutes ahead of her closest competitor.

Sandy Ford captured the women's 2-miler in 12:27, which placed her second overall in the short distance race.

JimBerndt took top honors among the men in 12:09, scoring his first Striders victory.
