The exact number of women serving in the U.S. armed force in the Persian Gulf is not available because of constant deployments and reassignments. A Pentagon spokesman said yesterday that women make up about 6 percent of U.S. troops there.

Here is a breakdown by military branch of the number of women in the Gulf:

Navy: About 1,400 active-duty and reservists.

Marines: Not available.

pTC Air Force: 2,081 (as of Jan. 15).

Army: About 6 percent of some 485,000 troops.

Coast Guard: 13.

Army and Air Force National Guard: About 5,153.
