Harford County's hills suit Boyer fine

RUNNING

January 29, 1991|By Michael Reeb

Dave Starnes, the director of Sunday's North Harford Loop 10K, and the terrain of northern Harford County make a formidable combination when it comes to road racing.

Starnes, the North Harford Loop 10K record-holder, loves hills, be they for training or competitive racing. The course is billed as having one steep uphill, two short steep uphills, a slight uphill, a gradual uphill, six rolling hills and three rolling hills.

Nathan Boyer, who finished the race first in 35 minutes, 22 seconds -- 10 seconds off Starnes' 12-year-old record -- has the perfect attitude for hilly terrain.

"There's no hills out there," Boyer said, tongue-in-cheek. "I like all terrains, as long as we all run on the same course."

Boyer and second-place finisher Jeff Hinte duplicated their one-two finish in the previous week's Hickory 7-Miler. Both races are part of the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club's Snowflake Series.

Margaret Cooper, who had won the women's division of the Hickory, was the first female finisher -- in 46:29.

NOTES: Bill Bojarski, whose 14th annual Kielbasa 6.1-Miler is the festival highlight of RASAC's Snowflake Series, ran the Hickory and the North Harford Loop 10K. . . . Hinte, who co-directs the HAT 50K -- the concluding race in the Snowflake Series -- with Phil Anderson, says he will run in this year's ultra. "I ran it the first year, Phil ran it the second, and I'm going to do it this year," Hinte said. The HAT run is this year's TAC Mid-Atlantic Championship for that distance.

Dave Cooley, the director of Sunday's Run Four Miles for the Homeless, said that race has been canceled. Entry fees that had been received have been sent back. . . . The Tri-Maryland Triathlon Club has two footraces on its 1991 schedule: the Quaker Quick Quint 5-Miler on Oct. 12 and the Tri-Maryland/Crystal Geyser Marathon and 10K on Nov. 24. Information is available from Brad Jaeger at 882-6103. . . . Last Train to Boston Marathon update: This year's race will be held March 2, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground. Last year, there were 60 finishers, but this year, race director Brad Roberts already has received 41 entries. Bill Schultz, the 1986 champion, has entered the race. . . .
