Cheers for Norwood

Buffalo fans gave the Bills a heroes' welcome yesterday and saved the biggest cheers for kicker Scott Norwood, who failed to make a last-second field-goal try that would have given the Bills a victory over the New York Giants.

"We love Scott! We love Scott!" shouted a crowd estimated at 25,000, interrupting master of ceremonies Kevin Keeley.

Norwood had tears in his eyes when Keeley yielded the podium to him.

"I've got to tell you that we're struggling with this right now," Norwood said, his voice breaking. "I know I've never felt more loved than this right now.

"We all realize the sun's going to come up tomorrow, and we're going to start preparing this football team," Norwood said to deafening cheers. "I'm dedicating next season to the fans of Buffalo."

The quote

Portland Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman, who will coach the NBA West All-Stars next month, on the fact that his star guard, Clyde Drexler, won't be a starter in the All-Star Game. "Clyde really deserves to start the game. I've always told our team if they do well, individuals will get their due recognition. Here we are, the team with the best record in the NBA, and we don't have a starter."
