Two sisters from Silver Spring died today at a Washington hospital after they were pulled from under the ice covering a pond late last night at a park near their Montgomery County home, police said.

The girls, Rachel M. Luna, 9, and Michell Luna, 11, were taken to Children's National Medical Center at Washington Hospital, where they died, said Marge Kumaki, spokeswoman for the hospital.

The girls were found by police divers in 4 feet of water around 11:30 p.m., nearly 11 hours after they were last seen by family members. The family lives on Serpentine Way near the park.

It was not known how long the sisters had been in the water, police said.

Michell died shortly before 2 a.m. and Rachel died at 3:30 a.m., Kumaki said.

Police said the girls were reported missing around 8:30 p.m. by their parents after they failed to return home from playing outside.
