Gala Lil 'Cap has 1-3 finishers for Leatherbury

LAUREL -- Wait For the Lady certainly was in no mood to wait for the ladies in yesterday's $56,300 Gala Lil Handicap.

Leading at every call, the filly posted a classic "lone speed" victory in the 1 1/16-mile race at Laurel Race Course.

Trainer King Leatherbury oversaw the saddling of Wait For the Lady and Thirty Eight Go Go, then had to leave for a formal affair. He didn't witness the race, but the results surely were what he had hoped for: Wait For the Lady proved herself an effective route runner and Thirty Eight Go Go finished a strong-closing third, then returned to the unsaddling area in apparent fine shape.

Alberto Delgado rode Wait For the Lady, whom Leatherbury claimed from Jim Murphy for $25,000 last May.

"She was running fairly easy and comfortable," said Delgado, who picked up the mount only in mid-afternoon. "Hopefully, she'd finish."

Taking a clear lead into the stretch, Wait For the Lady easily out-finished Crowned, a 3-1 favorite in a field of 10. Crowned, who raced closest to the winner throughout, extended her losing streak to 12; she has not won since her last start of 1989.

NOTES: Edgar Prado will be at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., to ride Miss Josh for Maryland trainer Barclay Tagg in the $50,000 Joe Namath Handicap today. . . . Leading rider Mike Luzzi rode three winners yesterday, giving him a 109-87 lead over Prado in the jockeys' standings. . . . Trainer Sandra Stancer has been suspended 15 days because of a positive test for theophylline, a banned respiratory medication, for Travelling Man in the eighth race Jan. 4. Her husband, Charles, is the trainer of record for her stable in the interim.
