January 27, 1991

Carroll County gained 275 people in the U.S. Department of Commerce's Census recount.

The population of the county, according to the revised figures released last week, totaled 123,372. That figure is up28 percent from 1980's 96,356, and up slightly from the 123,097 recorded in the preliminary census figures.

The numbers mean that Carroll County likely will not see any change in legislative representation when the state's General Assembly districts are redrawn in 1992.

At 28 percent, Carroll County was thesecond-fastest growing county in the metropolitan region, behind Howard County. Howard's population soared by 60 percent from 1980 to 1990, jumping from 118,572 to 187,328.

Revised town populations released by the Commerce Department are:

Hampstead, 2,608; Manchester, 2,810; Mount Airy (both Carroll and Frederick counties), 3,730; New Windsor, 757; Taneytown, 3,695; Union Bridge, 910; and Westminster, 13,068.
