10 Service Personnel Complete Training

January 27, 1991

The following area service personnel recently completed basic military training:

* Pvt. Michelle Y. Cox, daughter of Roger P. Cox of Dale City, Va., and sister of Lara L. Pillow of Fort Meade, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

* Pvt. Jonathan Jenkins, son of Carol A. Jenkins of Fort Meade, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C. The private is a 1988 graduate of Meade Senior High School.

* Pvt. Jeffrey S. Bubb, son of Ellis L. Bubb Jr. of Linthicum Heights and Linda L. Harding of Pasadena, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 1990 graduate of Andover Senior High School.

* Army National Guard Pvt. Timothy P. Carroll, son of Debra L. Morrison of Pasadena, completed training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 1990 graduate of Chesapeake High School.

* Airman Milton V. Slade Jr., son of Milton V. and Linda G. Slade of Millersville, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1990 graduate of Old Mill Senior High School.

* Airman Denise T. Cheeves, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Cheeves of Pasadena, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. She is a 1990 graduate of Chesapeake Senior High School.

* Airman Michelle L.Nolan, daughter of Phyllis N. Hollywood and stepdaughter of Robert T. Hollywood of Severna Park, completed training at Lackland Air ForceBase, Texas. She is a 1988 graduate of Severna Park High School.

* Navy Seaman Recruit John C. Straub, son of Charles K. and Elizabeth M. Straub of Crofton, completed training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla. He is a 1990 graduate of Arundel Senior High School.

* Airman Elery W. Amick Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy R. Rivers Jr. of Severn, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1986 graduate of Hammond High School, Columbia.

* Airman Christopher J. Dryden, son of Richard Dryden of Haymarket, Va., and Marsha L. Dryden of Severn, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1990 graduate of Falls Church High School.

CANTWELL BECOMES A NAVY LIEUTENANT

Navy Lt. MichaelT. Cantwell, son of Nicholas D. and Janice M. Cantwell of Edgewater,has been promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Luce, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

He is a 1982 graduate of Severna Park High School.

AIR FORCE HONORS KIRK FOR ACHIEVEMENT

Staff Sgt. Russell D. Kirk has been decorated with theAir Force Commendation Medal.

The medal is awarded to those who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of their duties on behalf of the Air Force.

The sergeant is a public affairs technician at Lajes Field, Portugal.

Kirk is the son of Donald E. Kirk of Frederick and Kerin M. Kirk of Ellicott City.

His wife, Keely, is the daughter of John Taber and Susan Taber, both of Pasadena.

He is a 1979 graduate of Mount Hebron High School, Ellicott City.

ARMY AVIATOR AYRES GETS HIS SILVER WINGS

Second Lt. Thomas R. Ayres Jr. has graduated from the officer rotary wing aviator course and received the silver wings of an Army aviator at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala.

Students received instruction in helicopter flying techniques, including tactical instrument maintenance, navigation and radio procedures.

He is the son of Thomas R. Ayres Sr. of Severna Park and Jo A. Hawk of Glen Burnie.

His wife, Lisa,is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Merritt, both of Bel Air.

The lieutenant is a 1985 graduate of Severna Park Senior High School and a 1989 graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

AIRMANJOHNSON COMPLETES COURSE

Airman Keith L. Johnson has completed the munitions systems specialist course at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colo.

Students were taught to inspect, assemble and dispose ofguided and unguided non-nuclear munitions. Included in the training were transportation and handling of equipment, safety and storage.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Bowen of Pasadena.

The airman is a 1990 graduate of Chesapeake Senior High School.

VICKERY QUALIFIES AS ARMY INFANTRYMAN

Army National Guard Pvt. Matthew S. Vickery has completed training at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the course, students received training toqualify them as light-weapons infantrymen and as indirect-fire crewmen in a rifle or mortar squad.

Instruction included weapons qualifications, tactics, patrolling, land mine warfare, field and combat operations.

Vickery is the son of Duke C. and Carol S. Vickery of Glen Burnie.

He is a 1989 graduate of Northeast Senior High School.
