20-year-old is charged with murdering wife

January 26, 1991

A 20-year-old man was charged yesterday with the murder of his estranged pregnant wife, Montgomery County police said.

Raul Machado of Glen Burnie has been charged in a warrant with first-degree murder in the death of Maria Elizabeth Rodriquez, 20. Ms. Rodriquez was shot twice in the head Thursday afternoon at a house in Wheaton.

Police said that they were seeking Mr. Machado in the Baltimore area and that he was considered armed and dangerous.

A full-term baby that was delivered from Ms. Rodriquez by Cesarean section died last night at Children's National Medical Center in Washington.

Doctors working at Suburban Hospital originally thought the baby girl was dead Thursday afternoon, after trying to revive her for two hours. But the baby continued a "neural reflex breathing," which is a typical response to resuscitation efforts, said John Davidson, a hospital spokesman. Such breathing normally stops after an hour or so, he said.

Nurses holding the baby realized about 6:30 p.m. that her heart rate was increasing. The baby was taken to the Children's Medical Center's intensive care unit, where she remained until her death at 7:49 p.m. yesterday.
