TAMPA, Fla. -- The day after the New York Giants beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI four years ago, coach Bill Parcells was linked to the vacant coaching job in Atlanta.

The Giants denied Parcells permission to talk with the Falcon because he had time left on his contract.

This week, one of the subplots to Super Bowl XXV is the issue o whether Parcells, with one year left on his contract, might retire from coaching.

Asked yesterday about his status, Parcells said, "After th season is over, I'll sit down and think about what I'm going to do. I have a year left. I do that every year."

Said Giants nose tackle Erik Howard, "I would be surprised t see Parcells leave after the Super Bowl."

* NO MORE ROAR: Mouse Davis, hired by coach Wayne Fontes to orchestrate the Detroit Lions' run-and-shoot offense, says he is leaving Detroit."

Fontes said during a meeting with Davis yesterday that he is planning to switch to a tight end-oriented offense, Davis said.

"He said, 'You can stay if you want to, 'but that would be kind of ridiculous," Davis said. "So I wished hem well, and away we go."

Fontes has said he plans some offensive changes, particularly in light of midseason criticism last year that running back Barry Sanders was carring the ball too little. Sanders still led the NFL in rushing with 1,304.

* KICKOFF COMRADE: And now, for the first time the Soviets also can play armchair quarterback when they tune into the 1991 Super Bowl.

Officials from the government-run Soviet Television in Moscow agreed this week to air an edited version of the Super Bowl, according to officials who handle international rights to the game.

"We haven't worked out a time yet," said Jim Bukata, senior vice president of Trans World International. "It may be in March, or even as late as May."

* ET CETERA: Buffalo tight end Butch Rolle missed practice yesterday with a sprained ankle and is listed as questionable . . . Giants running backs wore uniform numbers in the 90s yesterday because Parcells was concerned about spies . . . The forecast for Sunday's game calls for temperatures in the low 70s, and there should be increasing cloudiness with a chance of rain by afternoon or evening.
